If you’ve ever searched for makeup inspiration before booking an appointment, you’re definitely not alone. Almost every client walks in with a few saved photos from Pinterest or Instagram and says, “This is exactly what I want.” And honestly, I love when clients bring inspiration.
Those photos tell me so much. They show me the style you’re naturally drawn to, whether you love soft elegance, glowing skin, bold glamour, or something timeless and classic. They give me a starting point and help me understand the feeling you want to create.
But there is one important thing that every client should know before sitting in the makeup chair. Your makeup should never look exactly like someone else’s. At first, that might sound disappointing, but it’s actually the reason professional makeup looks so beautiful.
The woman in that inspiration photo has her own face, her own eye shape, bone structure, skin tone, eyebrows, lips, and facial proportions. You have yours. Even if I used the exact same products, the exact same brushes, and followed every single step, the final result would still be different—because your face is beautifully unique.
And that’s exactly how it should be.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is focusing only on the makeup itself without realizing that they’re also responding to the person’s natural features. Maybe it’s the way her almond-shaped blue eyes make the eyeliner appear softer. Maybe it’s the way high cheekbones catch the light, or how her lip shape makes a nude lipstick look fuller.
Very often, clients think they’re asking for a specific makeup look, when in reality they’re falling in love with the overall harmony of that person’s face. That’s why copying makeup doesn’t always create the same feeling. As a professional makeup artist, I don’t simply recreate photos—I interpret them.
